Jain Understanding of Spirituality

Reality

The Jain philosophers found it hard to accept that a mystical force sits beyond the far reaches of human senses, beyond imagination, beyond the limits of all logic, and is the source of joy, misery, wars, destruction, quakes, floods, life and death.

Rational thinking convinced them that these phenomena were natural, and could be explained based on the functioning and the interactions of the fundamental constituents of the universe. Furthermore, they reasoned that the concept of a supreme being is illogical, full of contradictions, unverifiable, and unnecessary to explaining the workings of the universe.

Instead of assuming that an imaginary external power has created this universe, they postulated that our universe is itself real and eternal.

The Jain philosophers, in their search for reality, concluded that there are only six fundamental elements (dravya)* in the universe. Nothing else exists. These six have existed forever and are eternal. No one has created them nor can anyone destroy them. This is reality.
